Essex Violence and Vulnerabilities Unit – ReRoute Programme

ReRoute is a voluntary programme for 17–25-year-olds in Essex involved in violence or drug-related offences. Part of the Essex Violence and Vulnerability Unit, it supports the Police and Crime Plan 2024–28. ReRoute offers intensive, early interventions—post-arrest—to reduce reoffending and harm. Skilled practitioners provide tailored support with housing, education, employment, and wellbeing. Trigger offences include Weapon possession, Drug Supply (A&B), GBH,Affray, Aggravated Burglary, Violent Disorder and Robbery. Outcomes include reduced re-arrests, return to education or work, and less demand on services—helping young people change their lives and protect communities

The average time between a young persons’ arrest/first contact with the justice system and appearance at Crown Court in some cases can be up to two years. This means there can be a significant gap between the time someone is suspected of committing an offence and the point they typically receive an intervention – if they are found guilty at court.

During this time the person may find it hard to deal with the uncertainty of their situation, may have little support by way of interventions in place and the persons’ vulnerability around environmental, behavioural, wellbeing and criminogenic factors is exacerbated and this can pose a risk to communities.

ReRoute workers (experienced practitioners with skills and experience from probation, youth justice, drug and alcohol, youth work) offer help and support for housing, finances, education, training, employment, future plans, lifestyle and health and wellbeing (based on identified needs).
